Coordinating Conservation Programs in the Albuquerque–Bernalillo Region

This case study documents recent public and nonprofit organizations’ land conservation plans in the Albuquerque–Bernalillo region, including local governments’ open-space programs and conservation easements promoted by land-trust organizations. This intersectoral approach to land conservation allows public and nonprofit organizations to share some of the implementation burdens; however, the cost of a decentralized approach has generated independent actions undertaken by public and nonprofit organizations in the region, despite the need for coordination. In response to these factors, this case offers an integrative analysis of intersectoral approaches to land conservation under a unifying conceptual framework that emphasizes the relationship between community actions and public and nonprofit land-conservation programs.
