Policy Brief
In response to the effects of climate change, many Australian cities are turning to nature-based solutions—actions to protect, sustainably manage, and restore natural or modified ecosystems in ways that simultaneously address societal challenges and benefit human well-being and biodiversity. These emerging tools for urban climate adaptation and mitigation include actions like urban greening, reforestation, wetland restoration, and green infrastructure. However, scaling up nature-based solutions in Australia and other countries requires a cautious, inclusive approach to ensure they are both effective and equitable.
This Policy Brief outlines how forward-thinking urban planning and land use policies can elevate land access, support community leadership, and develop flexible frameworks that accommodate diverse models.
