The benefit allows eligible taxpayers to perform work for the taxing entity in lieu of payment of all or a portion of real property taxes. Taxpayers work at the federal minimum wage rate. The number of hours of work to be performed is calculated by dividing the amount of property taxes owed by the wage rate.

Eligibility is limited to the applicant's homestead and the property must be non-income producing. The applicant must own, or be purchasing, the fee simple estate solely or jointly unless prohibited by ill health.

The claimant must be 60 years of age or older, a first responder with a permanent disability, or someone who suffers from a disability as defined by the taxing authority administering the program.

Description of State Funding for Tax Loss

The payment for work is paid to by check to the taxpayer, but is made payable only to the county treasurer. The taxpayer is responsible for delivering the check(s) to their county treasurer.
