Recent Events
- In August, World Water Week hosted a session discussing our exploratory scenario planning project and feature other partners and programs throughout the week.
- We hosted another exploratory scenario planning workshop in September 2023, collaborating with Sulphur Springs Valley in southern Arizona.
- The Water & Tribes Initiative partnered with the Getches-Wilkinson Center for Natural Resources, Energy, and the Environment at the University of Colorado Law School to host its annual summer conference on natural resources, “Crisis on the Colorado River: From Short-Term Solutions to Long-Term Sustainability.”
- Our Growing Water Smart program continued to broaden its reach: we hosted workshops for seven new communities in Utah and our first four communities in California.
- The University of Arizona’s Water Resources Research Center’s annual conference asked “What Can We Do? Solutions to Arizona’s Water Challenges.”
- At the American Water Resources Research Association’s annual conference, “Connecting Land & Water for Healthy Communities,” we hosted sessions with partners and fellow researchers.
- This event also provided the opportunity to highlight and honor the work of our Babbitt Center Fellows, both current and past.
- We supported the Arizona Association of Conservation Districts’ annual conference in August 2023.
Growing Water Smart
The Growing Water Smart program helps community leaders integrate water and land use planning to further the sustainability and resilience of their community. Multidisciplinary community teams of elected officials, water resource managers, land use planners, and other key personnel come together in facilitated workshops to develop an action plan for water smart change in their communities.
The Babbitt Center collaborates with the Sonoran Institute, Western Resource Advocates, Utah State University, community foundations, state agencies, local governments, and other NGOs from across the Colorado River Basin to amplify the reach and impact of this program. Babbitt Center Dissertation Fellowship Program
The Babbitt Center Dissertation Fellowship Program assists PhD students conducting research that builds on and contributes to the integration of land and water policy to advance water sustainability and resilience, particularly in the West. The program provides support to scholars early in their careers. The open call for applications begins annually in late fall and closes the first week of March the following spring.
