CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Visioning and Visualization: People, Pixels and Plans (104 pages; Paperback; ISBN 978-1-55844-180-4) was placed on Planetizen's Top 10 list for books related to planning and the built environment for 2009.

Visioning and Visualization, by Michael Kwartler and Gianni Longo, examines the ways that technology can be best used in the planning process that increasingly includes significant citizen participation.

“This book is aptly rife with large, color images that help convey the authors’ main idea: visuals are essential to planning with the community. When aided by the effective use of visualization tools, public participants are also more effectively responsive, simply because the information is straightforward and manipulatable,” said Planetizen, a news aggregator and Web site at www.planetizen.com. “Visioning and Visualization is an excellent guide on how such potential can be attained through current technologies.”

The book grew out of a series of workshops sponsored by the Lincoln Institute over the past five years, led by the co-authors, Kwartler, founding director of the Environmental Simulation Center, and Longo, founding principal of ACP–Visioning & Planning. The volume, richly illustrated with more than 100 color figures, photographs, and computer simulations, follows the same format as the award-winning Visualizing Density, the first book in the series. Visualizing Density and the related Web site made last year's Planetizen Top 10 list.

The Planetizen Top 10 list is in its eighth year, and is based on criteria including editorial reviews, sales rankings, popularity, Planetizen reader nominations, number of references, recommendations from experts, and the book's potential impact on the urban planning, development and design professions.

Visioning and Visualization is available on Amazon and can be ordered on the Lincoln Institute Web site in Publications and Multimedia.
