A Vision for Kona

Where Do We Grow?

This phase was primarily designed to answer the basic question of "Where do we grow?". Population projections indicated that close to 15,000 more people would be moving into the region in the next 15-20 years -- so where will those people build their homes, businesses, schools, parks, etc? What are the critical questions that should be considered to help guide development in way that will preserve and improve the quality of life for existing and new residents?

The "Mapping Kona's Future" workshop was a large public meeting designed to address these issues. Before this workshop took place, however, the consultant team had to do a considerable amount of work preparing the base maps in advance of the workshop. After the workshop, the maps generated by participants were digitized and analyzed so that the results could be documented thoroughly and objectively.
