A Vision for Kona

How Do We Grow?

A charrette is a planning technique that has been widely applied throughout the world. It is an effort that brings together – in a compressed period of time – the talents and energies of consultants, staff, stakeholders, and residents to address specific planning and design issues. It provides a series of feedback opportunities so that decisions can be made and the process can move forward with the support of the public. Phase 3 utilized a two-charrette technique to address the nature and quality of future growth in Kona. The first charrette occurred in March 2006. Concepts were developed during the interim, and the second charrette in June 2006 was used to finalize development concepts. Each charrette was comprised of a variety of activities, including public meetings, open houses, and meetings with the Kona Community Development Plan steering committee. Some key components of How Do We Grow? – Charrettes 1 and 2 are described in the following pages.
