Trust Lands and Education Funding Reports

The Children's Land Alliance Supporting Schools (CLASS) and the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy/Sonoran Institute Joint Venture on State Trust Lands (LILP/SI Joint Venture) have jointly developed research investigating the mechanisms by which revenues derived from state trust lands are distributed to educational institutions in the Western United States. This series of reports, "Trust Lands and Education Funding" is organized into state specific information, with the goal of clarifying the role of state trust land revenues in meeting educational needs in various states.

Despite the influence of education funding mechanisms and management funding mechanisms on trust land management, in most states these mechanisms and incentives are complex and are not well understood by trust managers, beneficiaries, other stakeholders, and the public at large. To address this need, CLASS and the Joint Venture compiled information about the revenue streams from the land to the schools, including the flow of funding, the identified missions of the trust managers, how and if managers increase value along the way and the impact the revenue has on schools when it arrives.
