Of Interest Louisiana, like other states, did acquire ownership to the regular Section 16 in each township for school purposes, but not every Section 16 in a township is a "school section 16". Louisiana also has large land grant sections and small radiating or river lot sections that may be designated as "16" - so not every Section 16 on a map is for schools. Additionally, Louisiana, by way of its Parish Treasurers and Parish School Boards, sold a large percentage of the School Section 16 (or portions thereof) in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Today, these lands are privately owned. Those that are still owned by the State are under the complete management, control, and authority of the 64 Parish School Boards. The State Land Office has nothing to do with these lands. Therefore they are not plotted upon the State Land Office maps available on the web site.
