How do planning and development decisions affect the overall fiscal health of a local government? And how does the fiscal condition of a local government constrain planners’ proposals for the development of a city? As metropolitan areas experience growth or decline, the overall fiscal health of a local government has become a major issue. Although planners are not directly involved in the local government budget process, the potential interactions among planning decisions and fiscal policies are complex and many. These questions and issues lie at the core of the set activities that constitute our Teaching Fiscal Dimensions of Planning project.

FDP consists of a series of activities that are intended to provide the skills that will enable planners to more rigorously project and evaluate the fiscal dimensions of planning. FDP activities include both research and training. The project began in 2005.
