GLOBAL UNIVERSITIES AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT ANALYZES ROLE OF HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS IN CITIES AROUND THE WORLD

Second in series includes case studies in Germany, Scotland, Japan, Mexico, and South Africa

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Universities in cities around the world are breaking out of private enclaves and playing a critical role as urban institutions in a knowledge economy, according to a new book that reviews case studies from Helsinki to Mexico City to Seoul.

Global Universities and Urban Development: Case Studies and Analysis (M.E. Sharpe and the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, 2008 / 384 pages / Paper / $39.95 / ISBN 978-0-7656-2040-8), edited by Wim Wiewel and David C. Perry, explores the evolving relationship between universities and their host communities.

The book is the latest result of Lincoln Institute–sponsored research on the role of universities in urban development, following The University as Urban Developer: Case Studies and Analysis (M.E. Sharpe and Lincoln Institute, 2005), also edited by Wiewel and Perry. The work has been part of the Lincoln Institute’s City, Land, and The University project, which seeks to improve the collective capacity of leaders to balance the multiple interests of institutions and communities.

Global Universities and Urban Development explores the ways that institutions of higher education contribute to the economic vitality and quality of life of cities. Linking the fields of real estate development, higher education, and urban design, this volume offers case studies of universities in 13 countries in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

The book features contributions from noted urban scholars, campus planners and architects, and university administrators. A concluding chapter by the editors offers practical evaluations of the cases and identifies innovations, entrepreneurship, and best practices in the field.

Advance praise for Global Universities and Urban Development:

“Universities worldwide are key components of an increasingly important urban leadership group now called anchor institutions … Wim Wiewel, David C. Perry, and their partners at the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy have contributed seminal scholarship about this topic in the United States, and this book breaks new ground with its survey of key universities in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. This cutting-edge volume is authoritative, essential reading for public and private decision-makers, students, and faculty concerned with urban growth and development.”
-- Eugenie L. Birch, Lawrence C. Nussdorf Professor of Urban Research and Education, University of Pennsylvania
